Hello

Hello Everyone,

I am in the Boy Scouts of America, an organization focused on teaching boys leadership skills, outdoor skills, and a willingness to serve others. In scouts there are six ranks, with the highest being Eagle Scout. I am currently working to become an Eagle Scout.

One significant requirement for Eagle Scout is completing a service project for your community. For my service project, I am renovating the main room on two floors at an orphanage in the town where I live. I’ll be working in cooperation with a local youth organization. The rooms that we renovate are the areas where the kids meet and play. We are going to smooth and paint the walls and windows, and install a plastic paneled ceiling. After that, an artist who works with my dad will paint some murals on the walls with the help of some of her local students.

To do this project I need to buy materials, supplies, and tools. All of the labor will be provided by volunteers. I completed a cost estimate with the help of a local workman; the total cost came to nearly $1000 for both rooms. The youth organization was inspired by this project and would like to also repair and paint the 4 corridors on the two floors where we are working with volunteers. The cost of materials for this additional work would be $950. So any extra funds raised for my project will be used for this additional work.

To complete this project at the orphanage I am looking for people to support the work financially. If you would like to make a contribution of any amount, the easiest way to do this is through paypal at this account: rmanila@springwater7.org. Be sure to check the option “I'm sending money to family or friends” to avoid paypal fees being withdrawn from any contribution using paypal or bank funds. If you need a tax-deductible receipt or would like to send a check for the donation, I have another way to receive funds, please write to me at Dan_eagle@springwater7.org for more details. One hundred percent of any money received will be used for the improvements and assistance at the orphanage.

In order to start the project on time, I borrowed money, which is why I'm fundraising after the project has begun.

The Eleventh Day: Finishing Part 1

We finished the second room! Very little remains now, besides the painting of the murals. That is due to start in about a week. On this day we put up the ceiling molding, did some touch-up painting, painted the floor molding, and cleaned-up. We also stabilized one wall that was broken, and we began replacing the broken or missing windows.

Cutting a piece of molding

Painting the molding on the floor.

Putting together one of the light fixtures.

We painted in-between the windows. That was a pain!

Putting up the molding

We ended up stabilizing the wall

Preparing to but in a new pane of glass.

The Tenth Day: The Beginning of the Ende

On the tenth day we started the finish up. We completed the rafters and the ceiling, and we paint both walls with oil-based paint. We also began to do the windows and doors. The room is looking really good.

Putting up some of the last ceiling panels

Painting on the new oil-based paint

Doing the cutting by the edge could be annoying.

I really did work in this project, honest!

We also painted the windows

And the radiators

The windows could be difficult, do to the precision required.

Here is a comparison of the new colors and the old colors.

Finishing up for the day!

The Eighth Day

The eighth day was a short day, where we merely finished up the spackling.

The Ninth Day

On the ninth day we put up the water-based paint and finished most of the rafters. Only a small area remains. We also put up about a quarter of the ceiling panels.

Putting on the paint!

It looks a lot better than the previous coat!

The new coat of paint really makes the room feel brighter

We also put on a good bit of the ceiling

Each panel had to be cut to fit properly

Screwing in the panels

Cutting a panel quickly on the spot

Did some minor touch-ups.

The Seventh Day

On the seventh day, we finished up putting on the mortar, we speckled most of the room and we put up a couple rafters. Unfortunately our drill broke after four rafters, so we had to stop with that until it could get fixed.

We started the rafters, before the drill broke.

Putting in the rafters.

Mixing up some mortar, just to finish up.

We put on most of the spackling today.

But we had just gotten started here.

We did a little bit of touch up in the first room.

We repainted the windows.
And the pipes.

Day Six: Here We Go Again

On the sixth day we put on the mortar for the second room. We're starting over again! On this day only three people came, so less was done.

The Fifth Day

On the fifth day we finished the oil-based painting. We also put up a new light fixture in the room. And we began the first room, finished the scraping on this day.

Getting close to being done!
The room, finished!

The fourth day

On the fourth day we did the water based painting and put up the molding around the plastic ceiling.

Day Three: What's Up?

A brand new ceiling. On Day Three we finished the new ceiling and sanded the spackling to make it total smooth for the painting.
